In Clear lakes and lakes that have a great deal of fishing pressure big bass will hide in thick cover for most of the day. You probably did not know there is a good possiblility that your local lake becomes very active at night! Those big fish that were hanging tight in cover most likely will come out at night and feed aggressively in 3 to 10 feet of water. The darkness gives them cover and they don’t have to work as hard when they attack their prey. There is very little fishing pressure at night because there are not many night bass fisherman. The word night fishing is exciting and very few fisherman take advantage of it. The night brings solitude and any night sounds are amplified over the water. This is the time when a very sensitive rod tip and a good pair of hands will come in handy. Normal sounds of boat traffic, swimmers, skiers, is replaced by the night sounds of birds like hooting owls and of course the sound of feeding fish. There is a very good chance that if you are fishing on a clear lake you will catch more bass when you are night fishing and there sizes will be much bigger. The best time to start thinking about night fishing for bass is when the water temperature rises into the upper 50 degree mark, but your best night fishing for bass catch will be when the water temperature rises well above 60 degrees. Any lake that contains a health population of crawfish or spring lizards, (salamanders) is usually a good for catching bass at night. The salamander larva, ofton refered to as a water dog works well for bass bait at night also. If you want a good place to set up to go night fishing for bass, locate areas on your local lake that have bottoms with rocky gravel. The bass will feed agressively here because the crayfish are much more active at night. If you set up a underwater fishing light in this area you will attract the crayfish close to your anchored boat. The light will also attract zooplankton and other bait fish, which get the bass feeding even more aggressively.
